Generally MapWindow is downloaded from the internet as a single installtion file with an “exe” extension. To install MapWindow, simply run this application (for example by doulbe clicking the icon for the installer). This will open a standard installation program that will install MapWindow on your computer.
Advanced options include which plugins to install and where to install the software. MapWindow is typically installed in the following location:
c:\program files\mapwindow
Plugins (core plugins, optional plugins, and third party plugins) are installed in the following locations:
c:\program files\mapwindow\applicationplugins c:\program files\mapwindow\plugins
The “applicationplugins” folder is used for any plugins that are a fundamental parts of MapWindow and as such do not appear in the MapWindow program “plugins” menu. Any plugins installed in the “plugins” folder appear in the list of plugins in the program's “plugins” menu.
Once you have installed MapWindow and use it for the first time, you will be given the opportunity to take an online survey about your experience. Please use this survey to communicate any questions or concerns about your experience. We give a monthly T-shirt award to a random survey respondant.
If you need to uninstall MapWindow, use the Uninstall link on your start menu or in the Windows control panel. When you uninstall MapWindow you may need to delete the c:\program files\mapwindow folder as well as there may be temporary user files written to that location at run time which are not automatically uninstalled.
