I've now used TortoiseSVN to update my copy of MapWindow, as of 8/10/2011. However, when I run MapWindow, I get the message "\Program Files\mapwindow.svn\ApplicationPlugins not found, edit default.mwcfg to specify location"

How can I go about editing default.mwcfg? I don't see that option anywhere on the tool bars.

Regards,

Roy

Brian,

I've updated my copy of MapWindow as of 8/10/2011, but I don't see an "Export Map HQ" option under File-->Export.

Has that option been installed yet?

Roy

Hi Roy,

You said you updated it on 8/10/2011, do you mean using the SVN? If so I'm not sure if the updated version is compiled on the SVN. The source code is there but I'm not sure if anyone has updated the Bin folder.

Brian M.

Edit: Ok there you go, I rebuilt the version on the SVN. It should now include the export option.

I'm committing new binaries almost on a daily basis.

In fact the Export->HQ map is already in the latest beta installer that was published last week.

If you look at the SVN Log of your bin folder you can see when the last update of the binaries was. I always add a description like 'New binaries'

Paul,

Today (8/11/2011) I downloaded and installed ”tinyurl.com/mwMonthly (32-Bit)” from [www.mapwindow.org] .

1. I noticed it is 44.8 MB in size. That's much smaller than all the other versions I've downloaded since June. (The others range from 45 MB to 52 MB.) Are any modules missing?

2. When I launch MapWindow and the plugins are being loaded, I get the error message “Error: Loading the appinfoxml.” I click OK and MapWindow continues.

3. When I try to open the United States sample project, the “An error has occurred” window appears, and a big red X crisscrosses the Legend box, which is otherwise empty. (The toolbox sector seems OK.) I click OK and MapWindow continues.

4. When I try to load my own project, MapWindow says “An error occurred while opening this project,” and only one layer seems to be loaded. (You have a current copy of my project files.)

5. When I click the red X to exit MapWindow, I get the message “An error has occurred.”

Regards,

Roy

P. S. I’m able to HQ-Export both the sample map and the portion of my project that successfully loads.

Brian,

Excellent! As a test, I was able to HQ-export a jpg of the United States sample map in tabloid (17" x 22") format at 300ppi .

However, the new version of MapWindow choked while loading my personal project. Still, one layer of the project did successfully load, and I was able to export it in tabloid format. My fingers are crossed that the HQ-export will be able to handle my project even when all its many layers are loaded.

This is just great!

1. The tabloid size suits my purpose beautifully.

2. I can now bypass the malfunctioning printer module, which I've been using to indirectly create a digital image of the map. Instead, I can now directly create a high-quality image.

Thanks loads!

Roy

P. S. For what it's worth, I tried exporting the United States map as 10,000 x 10,000 x 600. What came out was a 1.2 MB file that was completely white. Not a problem for me, though.

Hi Roy,

1. We removed DotSpatial.Projections again. It was not mature enough. We've implemented GDAL/OGR with proj4 instead. It is much more stable, faster and is part of the ocx now. A new class called GeoProjections was added. This was all done by Sergei, by the way.

2. You keep having strange issues. Do you have any old versions of MapWindow installed or did you install DotSpatial/MapWindow6? If so please remove them all.
Are you running the installer as an Admin? That might help as well.

3, 4 & 5 See answer 2 as I don't have does issues and haven't seen any reports about this from others.

Paul,

Comments below.

Incidentally, surfing to [mapwindow.org] and clicking on the first "Download"
button brings the user to a page that offers to download MapWindow 4.7. Clicking
"Cancel" and then clicking "Mapwindow GIS 4.8" offers up the June 22 version of 4.8.

Is all this as it should be?

Regards,

Roy

If DotSpatial is installed on my system, it was installed
only by a MapWindow installation package.

I still have MapWindow 4.8.2 installed because it functions
without problems. I've renamed its folder "mapwindow.old."

I now used the latest (8/17/11) 4.8.3 installer to install
MapWindow 4.8.3 into folder "mapwindow."

Should any of this be the source of problems?

Paul,

I guess an apology is in order.

Today I installed the latest version of MapWindow onto a different computer than the one that MapWindow chokes on. MapWindow works beautifully on the second computer, with no error messages.

Seems like my main computer still has some subtle problems, ones that were not fixed even by my running "sfc /scannow" some months back.

Thanks to you and everyone for a great product! I'll be happy to contribute copies of my maps to your eventual online gallery.

Regards,

Roy

Hi all

I understand from Paul that the layout is going to be re-written in the future, so some of what i am asking may already have been requested. Please let me know if i should include this in a different forum list.

1) I would like to have the Atlas layout be able to update more than just the single text label using a field from the attribute table of the mapsheets. Am i able to code this or do i need to request this as part of the ongoing updates for the layout plugin?

2) Also, what i quite enjoy in ArcMap, is that you have a ruler around the layout view edge which you can click on and create 'snap-to' guides for easy layout construction. Could this be put on the wishlist of things to add to the layout plugin?

Thanks,

Nigel

Hi Nigel,

The layout plug-in is not being re-written, but some new features are going to be added. Snapping to rulers is a nice idea. I unfortunately have very little time to work on it these days other than to make bug fixes.

If some enterprising developer would like to take a shot at your feature requests I'd be very happy.

Hello again,

I followed the dicussion in this thread (diagonally) and wonder wether it is possible to use the Print-Layout Plugin together with my access-vba-application using the mapwindow ocx. Currently I'm using 4.7 but intend to upgrade to 4.8 in the next weeks.
If this would be possible (using the printlayout) - could anybody give an example, or at least point in the direction to go?

Thanks Helmut

Hi Helmut,

I don't know if it would be possible because all the print code is written in .NET while the OCX is written in COM.

You might be able to compile some sort of wrapper for it but I'm not sure how, you would need to do your own research.
