Okay so here are the steps I took in doing this:

Step 1 : Declare new shapefile, new shape, new two points and some double
Step 2 : Give xmin, ymin, xmax, ymax values to the points. (xmax, ymin and xmin, ymax)
Step 3 : assign points to shape
Step 4 : open shapefile
Step 5 : start editing shapes
Step 6 : assign shape to shapefile
Step 7 : stop editing shapes

So where did I go wrong and the polyline I was trying to generate did not exist? Please help, thank you.

After step 3 you should add the new shape to the shapefile.
Next add some cell values to update the attribute table, then save and close the new shapefile
Continue with step 4.

I hope it helps,

Paul

So I did what you said and move step six inbetween three and four. I also add a part before I assigned the points. It worked like a charm. Thanks!
