I don't know if there's a speed difference with gray or color. You try it.
You can set transparency using the properties of the layer.
Right-click on the image layer and select properties.

I managed to make my bilevel raster (1bit/bitmap) appear with tranparency, by make white to be transparent in property like you instructed.
It works in great speed but I just found out color depth is not my real problem.
