I have a list of 7 lat/lon points I want projected. I have saved them as a CSV, and followed these steps:

1.turn on the spatial converter plugin
2. use the "import" button
3. import the CSV file to a shapefile
4. Assign a projection to a shapefile tool in the new toolbox
6. Assign NAD83 (Mississippi TM) to the shapefile
7. add it to an empty map

The result is a shapefile that assigns the LAT/LON values to the X and Y coordinates and a really skewed LAT/LON values.

Can anyone help me out with this?.

Can you attach the csv file, so we can reproduce.
What is the projection of the coordinates in the shapefile.
You say lat/long does it means the projection is WGS84?

If so you need to assign that projection and next reproject the shapefile to NAD83.

Paul,

Thanks for your reply. The WGS 84 is correct (I think). The file is attached.

I'm having trouble understanding what you mean.

This is what I did.
Start a new project. Go to the statusbar and click on the projection (far left).
Select WGS84.

Now import the csv using the import option of the spatial converter.
You'll get a question what to do with the new layer. Select Assign projection from project.

Now I see in the statusbar Lat: 34.142 Long: -88.374
I go to the toolbox and select 'Reproject shapefile'
I select NAD83 (Mississippi TM) and a new shapefile is created.

When I close the current project and open the reprojected shapefile I get
X: 626,920.026 Y: 1,482,897.064

Are these the coordinates you're expecting?

Paul,

Thanks so much for your help on this matter. Your directions seemed to work. I will be overlayer this onto an existing polygon, so I will report if theree are an issues there.

Paul,

When I tried to overlay the points onto an existing shape that is in the Mississippi TM projection, they do not overlay. The points are off to the east and somewhat south of the original location.

The "working" points are produced by another program, and overlay fine. The "polygon" files are my existing polygon. The "reprojected" points are the mapwindow produced points.

I feel certain that most of this is INPUT error (by me). Thanks for your help.

Hi Sawlog,

I loaded up your polygon and looked at where it was on a map. You seem to be looking at the north western part of Tombigbee State Park. The geographic extent of the park is:

Top Left 34.242 -88.633
Bottom Right 34.228 -88.615

But the points that you are trying to load are located at
34.14225 -88.3721

The points are not within the bounds of the park so of course they won't line up with the polygon when everything is re-projected. I think there may be something wrong with the source of those points.

Hope that helps,

Brian M.

Brain, you were right, the points were stored to look like decimal degrees, but they were actually degrees, minutes, and seconds. I hae it going now, Thanks.
