Yes Dan, is very interesting, i'm studing the possibilities about this, but the problem is the slow load of the points and the format of data (XML,CSV, and so), i think that load more quickly with Shapefiles, and if you desire to see another document see the following:

I hope that it's illustrate you too. It use a shapefile reader class and a shapefiledisplay class to show the shapes into a wpf canvas.
I think that LINQ, WPF and the new class of Mapwingis and Mapwindow can be best integrated and very usefull for queries.
I'm trying to practice with generic collections, linq and extend methods of class. When I have anything i share here.

It would be a fascinating excercise to see how this might (or might not) work as a concrete implementation of the latest OSGEO models.
