I'm trying to get a current shapefile of US counties. Tiger 2009 county boundaries are almost what I want as they reflect the latest changes to county data (such as Alaska's 2008 formation of a few new county equivalents), but the borders on this shapefile extend into the water (such as the Great Lakes area), meaning that no islands are shown and the borders are generally long, smooth lines. I found a set of shapefiles (from where I'm not sure now) and ran them through with a simplification rate of 20%. Here's what I wound up with ... I would like to take the "states" shapefile that ships with MapWindow and create an outline of the Lower 48 USA. I tried using one of the included world shapefiles and deleting all but the USA and it gave me the general outline that I wanted, but it did not match the contents of the states shapefile. For example, Florida from the world shapefile looks very different than it does in t
