Write a Great MapWindow GIS Plug-in and Win an 8GP iPod Nano!

Summary

The MapWindow GIS Project is seeking new interesting and useful plug-ins that can be included with the core MapWindow GIS application. Please help us! We need you to write a GREAT MapWindow plug-in! It doesn't matter what it does... it just has to be great! (in the eyes of our judges...) The Geospatial Software Lab at Idaho State University is sponsoring this competition and will give a brand new 8 GB iPod Nano to the winner. All entrants will get a MapWindow tee-shirt!!!

Deadline

1 June 2008


How to Enter

Prepare a zip file that includes your source code, compiled binary (dll), and a short text file explaining how to use your plug-in. Make sure to include your name, address, email, etc. so we can contact you. E-mail your entry to Amanda Dale (daleaman @ isu.edu) on or before the deadline.


Rules:

  1. All submitted plug-ins must be fully compatible with MapWindow GIS 4.5 (download the candidate release from http://www.mapwindow.org/download.php).
  2. Code must be written in VB.NET or C# and must be compilable using the free Microsoft Express Edition compilers.
  3. Plug-in must not require any additional external dependencies beyond the requirements of the MapWindow GIS 4.5 Application.
  4. Only one entry per person.
  5. ISU Geospatial Software Lab employees and funding partners are not eligible to enter (sorry guys!)
  6. All source code must be your original work.
  7. Contributors must agree to license their code such that it can be included in the core MapWindow GIS application installer. (i.e. either with MPL, LGPL, MIT or equivalent license.)
  8. The judging panel will select the winner and notify him or her via e-mail within two weeks of the entry deadline.


Judging Panel

Judging panel will be composed of Geospatial Software Lab students and funding partners.

If you've never written a MapWindow GIS Plug-in, don't worry, it's really pretty easy. Here are some useful helps:

  1. Try the plug-in tutorials on the MapWindow tutorials web page here: http://www.mapwindow.org/tutorials/
  2. Download the source code to any of our existing plug-ins from our source code repository. Instructions are here: http://www.mapwindow.org/svn.php
  3. You can also post your plug-in writing questions on our plug-in discussion forum here: http://www.mapwindow.org/phorum/list.php?2
